The Walter Harzer you have identified on two photos is actually Hannes Gohler. However Harzer is on the very right of one photo.
I stand corrected, see a different angle of Göhler earlier in the thread

      Hello Mark

Nice thread. The guy between Macher and Harmel could be Max Schafer (post 3). I'm not 100% sure.

It's not Schäfer, I took the photo myself at a "DF" Treffen

              Best wishes,

Erich Hartmann (Oakleaves, Swords and Diamonds) when I visited him at his home in 1988.

In my view, Hartmann got older in much worse shape than some other veterans. Just don't know if it was a consequence of his10 years long tenure in Siberia or his heart condition that plagued him in later years. Or both.

Nice picture of the all time biggest fighter ace in his twilight years.

He also likes to drink - he was even drunken once when meeting Hitler to receive another award...

When I was in the army, a comrade met him while taking a ride in a bus (from the station to the base). Hartmann was on the way back from a cassino - drunken...

In October 2009, I had a meeting in Germany with a retired Colonel of the Bundesluftwaffe, Starfighter pilot, who once was under Hartmann's command. He had a very low opinion of him, stating that his way to command was to boast his accomplishments during the war. This Colonel also knew Rall, Barkhorn, Krupinski and Steinhoff during their tenures as commanders in the Air Force, and said that they were all better leaders than Hartmann.

Anyway, I'm not beating a dead horse, just sharing a point-of-view I had access to.

                            Very interesting insights.
In some biography about him I had read it is mentioned that he didn't want to return to military service after his release from Russian POW camps. He would prefer to start a brand-new career, maybe in medicine, as his father. However, he was too "old" to come to return to university. The military career was an easy and fast way to get a job.

I'm not scorning his deeds as a fighter pilot during the war, which I always will admire. But there was a man behind the medals and pictures, and its history in the postwar years might be interesting as well.
