Nice thread. The guy between Macher and Harmel could be Max Schafer (post 3). I'm not 100% sure.

In my view, Hartmann got older in much worse shape than some other veterans. Just don't know if it was a consequence of his10 years long tenure in Siberia or his heart condition that plagued him in later years. Or both.
Nice picture of the all time biggest fighter ace in his twilight years.

When I was in the army, a comrade met him while taking a ride in a bus (from the station to the base). Hartmann was on the way back from a cassino - drunken...

Anyway, I'm not beating a dead horse, just sharing a point-of-view I had access to.

Very interesting insights.
In some biography about him I had read it is mentioned that he didn't want to return to military service after his release from Russian POW camps. He would prefer to start a brand-new career, maybe in medicine, as his father. However, he was too "old" to come to return to university. The military career was an easy and fast way to get a job.
I'm not scorning his deeds as a fighter pilot during the war, which I always will admire. But there was a man behind the medals and pictures, and its history in the postwar years might be interesting as well.
