Well, here are some details. I've just compared my P/O and Pilot Badge.

    P/O - 43g, 52,64 high, 42,61 wide, 63,28 wings - SWIRLS

    P - 46,1g, 52,77 high, 42,82 wide, 63,39 wings - SWIRLS

I must say, on the Pilot, I could not see the swirls with a X10 loupe. But with the Macro lens, the swirls became apparent. Look toward the upper left wing, from the reverse. And on the P/O, lighting is playing hell with the swirls. But they are there, too.

Not sure what all this means. I must say, Mathias' badge has some good things going for it...

Jeff, I think you missed my point somewhat. Of course not all fakes have the fingerprint, but most fakes aren't convincing with respect to multiple features of a genuine badge.

If a faker has gone through all of the trouble of copying every detail of a GWL badge to a "T", they obviously have serious talent. Adding the fingerprint for assurance would be the easy part to such an individual. So, if a badge has everything right about it, but lacks a fingerprint, I don't think I'd count it out.

I agree completely. The trouble is Mathias' badge is missing the swirl and has a different finish than is normally encountered. If it had the same finish that I am used to seeing on originals I would have no problem loudly proclaiming it as an original. When two things are different I pause to wonder why. Like I said earlier, I see a number of things to like about his badge and am leaning to the fact that it is an original. best wishes,

After studying the examples in front of me, I tend to think that the swirl is NOT easily replicable. Even in front of a macro lens, the swirl is so shallow, that it is only visable at the right angle, and the right lighting. You can't pull a toothpick over it and feel the ridges.

I'm not sure how fakers make high end copies, or what technology they use, but the swirls are microns high.

          Just more food for thought.....
