Hi everybody

I would like to get your opinions on this. The pin has been put on backwards in my opinion and the catch as been repaired at one time.

Hi Dave,

It might be a repaired original but the photos aren't good enough to be sure. Could you show sharp closeups of the catch and hinge areas as well as sharper larger photos of obverse and reverse?

The problem is there are pretty good fakes of this badge as discussed here:

Hi Dave,

From these photos I'd say it's an original R.S.&S. with replaced catch and pin (or at least messed-with pin). Perhaps an old repair considering the vintage post-war catch.

Is the ball hinge loose in its crimp? If so, you could flip the pin up and rotate the hinge 180 degrees so the pin doesn't look backwards. (Wouldn't force it though...)

Here is our reference thread on these. They were not considered tricky fakes until recently when Norm identified a pretty good fake in the thread he listed above.

I agree, original RSS zincer but the catch and hinge pin replaced and main pin attatched in wrong way.

To best photograph badges by the way, I recommend macro on, flash off, natural lighting, steady platform to take the shot (stack of books, tripod, etc.).

I prefer on white paper backgrounds, outside, with another piece of cardboard to block the sun.

Using the timer helps if you have the steady platform also.

Keeping fingers out of the shot also helps IMO.

When you do all this, you will get a result something like this and the camera I was using is not that great (still using it though).
