    Hard to know, but as Hans Günter said, we know they initially sewed the badges on to the uniform -- this is clearly seen on portraits with the 1st pattern badges. The question is whether the 2nd badges were any different in that respect. Did the Legion Condor uniforms even have any loops for award pins like was customary in the wartime uniforms? Maybe loops and reverse hardware were a later idea for this particular badge, and whoever made the 2nd pattern badges just completed the order in the way in which it was requested by von Thoma. It would have been less expensive without pins if it was a private venture.
