GAB Unknown Maker #11 for Discussion

This is regarding the GAB I have on the e-stand. It is made by the same manufacturer as 1.28.1 Unknown maker #11 on pages 300-303 of Frank's GAB Book.

A question of whether or not the catch has been replaced, or perhaps just something about the catch may not be quite right, has been raised. Specifically, the brightness of the finish surrounding the catch is the issue.

If you compare all the hardware on my badge to that shown in the photos in Frank's book, they are a match. There is a variation with the placement of the catch. The hinge and catch have been attached very neatly and are very secure on the badge.

The area around the catch is definitely brighter, as are areas around the hinge (left side and below the catch on back of the eagle's head). I honestly did not give it a second thought when I purchased the badge, but since the question has been raised I thought I would throw it out for some opinions.

I'll show the badge and some close-up photos of the hinge and catch.

                      Hi

Looks fine to me. I don't think that the catch has been replaced or that is been repaired. You can see this with many badges. The solder is a different metal type then the badge obviously and it's retained the finish better then the rest of the badge. I see nothing wrong with this one.

I think Kenneth has made a very good point here. The silver wash often react totally differnt on the mix of metals used for making the badge: body, catch, hinge, pin an solder.

I agree there's nothing wrong. Nice badge

                              Hi Eric

                              Thanks for posting great pics.

I raised the issue with Eric because to me, the catch area does not look quite right. I am aware of often seen soldered areas retaining finish, as Ken pointed out. Certain badges by certain makers are known for this.

However, I have not seen other examples of this makers GABs with a similar condition. If someone has one please post. These are fairly common. I also feel the area around the catch does not look like a finish, more like a "paint". Check out posts #4 and #5. I am pretty sure that the reverse of the badge was not finished all over with that "finish".
It is also worth noting the darkened area under the finished area we are discussing.

                              regards
                              Graeme
