I have had this for awhile , but never really paid much attention to it I posted it on a different thread, and noticed some color in it that had me start to wonder, it was sold to me as a silver, now I am not sure, What does the experts think. Absolutely Laurence ... you can usually tell alot by looking at the recesses on both the Obverse and Reverse. I would say you are correct. Silver wound badges would not have gold gilt on the incluse or on the reverse. The Gold coloring usually stays put around these devices much like yours.Originally posted by Laurence Strong
Take a look at a Gold Wound Badge I have. Most of the Gold is completely worn off the Obverse except for a few gold marks here and there. By looking at the Reverse, it is apparent that it was indeed a Gold by what's remaining of the Gilt finish.

For me, too hard to tell from the images. Silver badges CAN age to a gold tone, especially if a laquer has been applied at any time. These 100s sometimes did have a laquer applied.
One way to test - VERY carefully - would be to use an ear bud dipped in acetone - a laquer will be removed very quickly and leave the underlying silver finish. Only do it on a small test area though.
Re Lauren's badge on the other thread, looking carefully at the pic in post#3, there seems to be a more reflective yellowish patch around the hinge which extends in a line below the pin towards the catch BUT elsewhere on the reverse of the badge there appears to be dull/worn finish of a very different tone - to me indicating a possibly laquered finish.

I would tend to believe that it is a gold one but I would try the acetone as well to be sure (Nail polish remover is essentially acetone so you can use that).

Peter is a Good guy in this hobby.. and also I think that you badge looks very close to the other badge in the other thread.... so If You have You badge in Canada.. and the ther very similiar badge is found in France - I would think it's a real gold grade...
Ps maybe somebody has a 100 gold WB with finish intact ????

Thanks Micheal I will try the acetone test tommorow,I have a good feeling that it is a gold just by the way it's only left in the hard to reach places, and by the "wear patterns". If it does turn out as real, it will be a pleasant surprise I am hoping Mark or Pascal will chip in with their expertise. I also have nothing bad to say about Peter, I hhave dealt a lot with him and never had a problem

Well I tried some nail polish remover and it stayed the same. So thats a good point and that has me leaning towards it being a gold WB. That would definetly be nice, however I would like and appreciate some more opinions before I accept this thought whole heartedlyComment
