I appreciate these discussions, and am finding more examples of regulation being ignored, based on the personal tastes of the soldier. Very interesting!

That certainly is one possibility. Here are a few other possible explanations:

      1) It was a conscious effort to limit the length of the medal bar. At eight places, the Iron Cross is already slightly beyond the center of the tunic. If another medal was added, the Iron Cross would then be obstructing the breast eagle. Of course, if the medals were overlapped a bit more, nine medals could be mounted without increasing the overall length of the bar.

      2) This officer liked his medal bar made up of all crosses. He did not want to add a round medal "gong" to his medal bar of eight crosses.

      3) This officer, despite the regulations, felt that there was no need to display the Wehrmacht 12-Year LS Medal. Just by the presence of the 25-Year LS Cross, it is obvious that he rated all four long service decorations.

      Best regards,
      Tom

These are definitely all quite possible scenarios.

      Thanks Tom.

        Thank you, Pierce!

Medal bars are such fascinating things to study. Just by looking at them, they tell us so much about the individual that wore the bar. Not only do they show us the career and accomplishments of the person, but they offer subtle clues to their character and personality. And I have always been amazed that there isn't greater appeal and appreciation amongst the collector community for these historically significant artifacts.

        Best regards,
        Tom

Strange - the 4th class service medal is worn in front of the 3rd class medal - a tailor's error perhaps?

                  I'll add this two:

                  Großadmiral Erich Raeder

                    Sepp,

                    Thank you for your comment.

I am afraid that is not Raeder's medal bar.

                    Kind regards

Unfortunately, this one was not as it originally was, also the fürstlicher Hohenzollern and the Hanseatic were missing.
