Marvin, yes I have seen your TDB gold type 3 before, I did save some pictures of it for my archive and noticed it has been partially cleaned in the mean time, as it was rusty, now making it more desirable, nice !

Hi again,

I have been away a few days and want to thank you for your PM's on these.
Another thread on the TDB's has just pushed me to get on with this thread, I would have liked to state my findings there but I think it is better to keep things together here for future reference.

This reproduction type 5 is one of the most confusing and therefore most discussed type reproduction TDB of all.
It resembles a type 2 tank (original type) with nearly all the details and of a very high quality.

the back of this one has a aged wool cloth. The bad loose weave aluminum strip is also found on the reproduction Aircraft Destruction Badges we see all over.

These tanks are found on different backings (the cheap aluminium weave the somewhat better quality alu weave as on the more common 1957 types).
The variations I have handeld are all stamped of a copper or bronze alloy They tend to bend very easily and have a range of colors from a silver wash up to dark brown / black.

Here is a close up of the tank, notice the quallity of detail.

The major difference: The tank is slightly larger than the type 2 or 2a, it can vary in width and height up to 1,5 mm and it is thicker. It being bigger, thicker may even be the give-away of these being reproduced (pressed or stamped) from a die made from a original type 2a badge...

Here is another example on a different backing. This is also known as the "fat barrel" type. The edges of the thick tank makes the barrel look wider.
Also notice the different black cotton sort and weave direction.

These types have been on the market since the 1970's sold to collectors as reproductions in bundles for a small amounts of money (as I have read on previous threads). They are not hard to obtain as they have not been accepted as original wartime manufactured badges by most collectors but still they are being modified to fool.

Here is another with a silver wash, aged and even looks to have been sewn on.
