                                Bill, note that those are MP38s, not MP40s. The smooth mag well with round hole gives it away. MP38s had machined receivers and were produced first, then the design was simplified into the stamped receiver version. If you see the same thing with no hole, it's a first model MP40. I'd guess that most MP38s found their way into armored and air divisions (very easy to store), and the FJs used them a lot too.

                                MP38s are very nice looking guns and easy to admire. Comparing them to MP40s is like doing the same to the MG34 and MG42. Same tool, but some of us drool over all that machine work.
