I think this confirms my overall opinion of this Helmet.

An ethical question; should one warn the bidders?

I, and others, have warned bidders in the past.
However, I feel that before spending large amounts of money on ANY collectable item, it is largely the Buyers responsibility to do SOME research.
I certainly don't condone the actions of all the fraudsters out there, but they prey on peoples ignorance and gullibility.

Yes.

It is true that people should study up before buying anything expensive in militaria and it is tempting to think of those that don't as fools and leave it at that. There will also always be newbie buyers who are trusting and jump in without exercising any caution.

Saving them from being ripped off with a short message and re-directing them to the forum, via recommendation, is not a bad thing. If they are buying helmets they are obviously intersted in collecting and should be helped so they can gain knowledge and enhance their new found hobby.

Who hasn't been stung somewhere along the line? Would You have appreciated someone telling You?

It is not that easy. A few years ago, when I would check ebay more closely than I do now, I used to warn buyers. One time a buyer told the seller who in turn reported me to ebay. Ebay warned me that I would loose my bidding priviledges if I warned a seller again.

I can see ebay's point. Imagine someone buying something original on the estand.....someone else warns the prospective buyer that the item is fake, yet he is wrong....could screw up the whole deal.

My rule is that you always help a friend, or someone who asks for an opinion. You don't volunteer an opinion if it is not solicited.

However, if one simply advised the bidder that you are a collector of WW2 German militaria, & invited them to check out this forum dedicated to that hobby, they might find out "on their own" of the questionable heritage of their intended acquisition. Maybe...

warning people

I don't advocate warning every poor sod out there on Ebay. I warned one person, once, and it turned out OK and several other people also warned him, too, and discussed it here on the forum.

I know of one person who warned a bidder only to recieve a reply telling him to mind his own business. he had obviously discovered the Shill bidder.

The worst sellers are the ones who hide the bidders and try to sell something they don't have, like an Fj helmet from a dealer's site or something. In these cases it is necessary to denounce them quickly.

Before I discovered the forum I bought a helmet on Ebay. Nobody warned me and it was a fake. So thanks a bunch. Got my money back after 2 months and it won't happen again..I would have appreciated the help at the time

I got stung by the Latvians and decided to get them back by warning people on e-bay that were bidding on their crap they sell there. I too got a warning from e-bay. I think the best thing to do is complain directly to e-bay when we see people doing the wrong thing, and hound them all the time regarding a particular seller whenever we see them selling bodgie stuff untill something is done with them. We must be the thorn in their side!.
