I think that I have seen this RK before here on this forum.
It that is the same cross, then I think that it was dertemined by someone with experince in weapons and firing at metal, that this kind of damage could not have been from a rifle.

PS This is just what I think that I can remember...and I can't find the thread at the moment.

I would have to disagree unless I was shown otherwise. That ripping and tearing is a fast moving projectile and hit that cross at an angle striking front and rear arms. Does not look like a pistol to me at all.

Just my opinion but the bullet was moving at a hell of a clip and not seeing that damage at a pistol muzzle never mind at a distance. I don't think so and have blasted just about everything. I would guess you could measure the arm indents and close in on a caliber.

This is pure speculation on my part but due to the irregularity of the damage I'm inclined to think this may have been caused by shrapnel rather than a bullet. Nasty looking either way.

I wonder how anyone can say that. The shot might have hit from a weird angle, even a ricochet might have done it, or shrapnel.
Anyway, a fantastic cross with a story, or enigma if you like, I do

I would imagine that this was a grenade splinter, maybe a mills as seen in the sharp straight strike to core...

Piece of shrapnel would do that kind of damage quite easily.

Look at the front and rear arms, it was cylindrical and moved through at an angle striking both arms of the cross, looks like a rifle bullet hitting a thin piece of medal at an angle to me. View post # 2 at 3 O'Clock on both sides, on the rear its lower as if the trajectory was from an above angle.

I like this theory. It had to be a very powerful weapon to make this damage to a piece of iron.

Be good to see it in hand to get a better look and with that microscope Dietrich trucks in, you might be able to get more as well with that equipment. Interesting piece anyway and there will be answer I think by the end of the show as to what happened to it. I highly doubt the owner survived it.
