From the pics You provide and looking at the used metal-parts, I think it has a SMALL chance to be pre-1945. I don't think that this can ever be told FOR SURE and my opinion only depends on the used hook (looking like brass). That is NOT a proof, but most hooks on postwar trifolds are made from steel.
As a conclusion: I'm afraid, only the veteran, who brought back Your medal, knew the truth about it. If it was mine, I would keep it as it is.

I'm really sorry, but I'm afraid, this is the best I can do for You!

    Kind regards, Peter
Thank you very much for your opinion Peter, much appreciated!

Dont feel bad about not being 100% sure (either way) its not like I'm going to loose any sleep over this. Its an easy enough to replace item if it had been 100% sure it was bad and I will still get a "standard one" to frame with the others because its questionable but I'll hold on to it just in case as you suggest.

Not much background available that I recall. At 18/19 my concern was just finding stuff and background wasnt very important. This was one of my first aquisitions in 1971 before having any clue at the value of this stuff or that there were even copies! The vet asked $25.00 (CDN) for the 13 März 38 medal, an Assmann tombac pilot, 2 armbands, an SA buckle and a few metal & cloth eagles (that all proved OK when I was able to validate them later). He also told me he returned right after the war for health reasons so he didnt have a chance to "pick up" much stuff. Based on that, when the "trifold" issue came up in this thread, it would have surprised me that anybody in Germany (or Austria for that matter) would have been overly concerned about postwar manner of wearing TR regalia at the time he returned here...

    Regards

I picked this up today, a KVK on a wide tri-fold ribbon. With no evidence that 40mm ribbons for these tri-folds was manufactured during the war, I think it is safe to conclude these were made in Austria after 1945. I still think they are interesting and visually appealing.

Just an observation on the last KVK, this is how Hungarians wore the award as well.

Yes and Bulgaria and Croatia too... But the one Chris Pittman posted is without any doubt a nice, but post-war Austrian trifold-ribbon.

          Kind regards, Peter

Thanks for bringing this thread back up guys, I had almost forgotten about this...

When I posted my austrian mount Anschluss medal on 40mm ribbon discussed in posts 101, 102 & 105 opinions varied from adamantly post war to a very slight chance of being period (because of the brass hardware which is typical of pre TR/WW II austrian mounts)

I found this picture on "Weltkriegs-ehrenkreuz.de" which shows a soldatenbund veteran (the swaz on the armband is obliterated and the vet tie pin is very small but the breast eagle is unmistakable) wearing a trifold 6 medal bar in which the third and 4th positions are occupied by the Hindenburg cross with swords (ehrenkreuz) and the Sudeten medal (which was introduced even later than the Anschluss medal !)

So you were right Peter. Period trifold mounts might be uncommon but they did exist! While trifold bars would have been banned from wear when Austria became part of the "Greater Reich" for ACTVE government party and army officials as I suspected, common sens prevailed and the practice wasnt extented to veterans and other RETIRED personnel who were able to get these medals as trifolds to match the bars they had no reason to upgrade

                        Regards
