I haven't posted a new pick up here in a dog's age. I had a KVK1 with swords case that has needed a new tenant for quite some time. I finally found a suitable item on the Estand for a good price. It's a KVK1 with swords, in zinc, marked on the pin 43. It's a worn piece with some character that is a good match for the case, which is in similar condition.

That's right, there is something about plates attaching the hinge and catch on zinc or tombak badges. How does that work again? With most of the finish off this and none of the tombak characteristics coming through, I assumed it was zinc. There are no plates on this one.Originally posted by robert pierce View PostComment

I don't have a scale like that here. Is this baseplate thing an absolute? Because I have a KVK1 without swords that I'm pretty sure is tombak and it has a plate on the hihge part.Comment

Usually a backing plate on the catch indicates a zinc badge, although I have seen catchplates on Wiedmann EKI's. I've searched my files trying to locate a zinc '43' without a catchplate, but came up wanting. This will take some more study. Just found an old thread showing a couple of my KVKs. A 4 with swords, in zinc, which does not appear to have any backing plates. The other one is an L15 without swords, in tombak, which has a backing plate on the hinge. Hereès the link:
