DM, I've pondered this all day and even played with a 1 piece cross to work out the formula.

I understand your test but I just can't get the height of the beading whatever way I use either a digital or mechanical instrument!

I have tried taking the 5mm thickness of the frame and subtracting the thickness of the lip but but that doesn't seem reasonable as (we) haven't seen the edges of an original core...for all we know they might be stepped or even have a lip!

        Not about thickness

        Dietrich,

I wasn't speaking about thickness of the core but about the whole core, width and height. I think that the difference is here and we could approach the truth taking some Xrays of a cross.
        I'll try today

if you don't dare try this. Measure the complete thickness with the caliper, including the rim. Then measure the height of the rim (with the other side of the caliper ), both sides. Subtract the two heights from the total, and voils, you have the thickness of the core!

          Weights

I have two RK to KVK that are identical in every way dimensionally...but they have a 2 gram difference in weight. Why ?...they are both marked 900. Must be slight variations in the material composition.
My guess is that the differences we are seeing in RK to EK is the same and due to slight diferences in core materials..different job lots...different mills etc.
