Hi George, what is your opinion on the J.Ries? they are unsual and i assumed after initially putting the EK2 on the site a few months back that the consensus was that it was the awarded mans name that he had done. Now i have found this magnetic 57 EK1 with the same name on i think it would be just a miilion to one to find the guys personalised 57 cross! im thinking it must be a maker but i just really dont know. Any ideas?

If i'm not mistaken are ALL '57 awards produced by only one firm.
So I do not think that this is a makermark...
      Maybe you hit the jackpot...
      I do not know.

      Best regards,

I agree with George. If you don’t think that finding two totally different awards in different parts of the country is strange then what is?
It also makes you wonder how many other awards with the same name are still around.

I Do Think It Is Strange To Find Just One Award With That Name And 2 Is Very Strange Thats Why I Posted It....

What Im Asking For And Hoping To Share Is An Understanding Of What It Could Be ...

Is The Consensus Still That Its The Awardees Name? As With The Original Ek2 That I Posted As If It Is.... Its A Fantastic Coincidence That I Stumble By Accident Upon The Same Named Ek1 57 Some Months Later Over 300 Miles Apart. Im Just After Help And Adivce On This One As Its A Real Puzzel...thanks Sven

            Sven,

I guess if someone here would know the answer he would gladly share it with you. I'm at a loss and find both explanations, maker or owner, very strange.

Would you mind posting pics of the 57 EK1 and the EK2 in full, obverse and reverse?

I'll give you my opinion Sven for what it's worth. No way is this a recipients name. Look at the 2 separate marks. On the EK2 it could be mistaken for jeweller work but with the 57, it is obviously stamped as it appears to have been struck twice. The script is also the same.
This has to be a maker mark and one of a firm still trading in 57 even if only producing test pieces.

                              I think it's BS.
Nobody has ever heard of a maker "J. Ries" or ever come across an EK (or any other award) with such a mark -- until recently.
And if it's supposed to be the recipient's name? On two '57 EK 1s? I don't think so.
I think it's just somebody marking EKs to make them more interesting/desirable/expensive.
