To the best of my knowledge, J. Ries was never a manufacturer. On the other hand, it's probably not the most uncommon name in all of Germany. There may have been another J. Ries besides the sculptor.

an answer to the riddle of J.Ries

Ive been informed that its NOT a makers mark or a awardees name but its a retailer/distributor mark.

Though uncommon, there are EKs, also cases, outer card slip covers etc which turn up with retailer rather than maker marks on them, Sedlatzek being the most common.

So an answer at last and thanks to all you guys that have left me contributions i really appricate all your help.
