    Weights

Yes...there we have it then, Ron...early swords pieces as I suspected...note how Stan's is the typical weight (exact) for later versions...

As I recall (I hate taking it off the ribbon), my "without swords" example weighs 33.3 grams.

Here is my Deschler w/o swords. Apparantly no flaw. I know I have seen it before, but at this time I am unable to find it. It weighs in at 36.3g

The MM, not a good scan, will try and get a better one tommorow with my camera

I have just received a pm from Gordon Williamson on GMIC. I had informed him about this thread and the debate about flaws on the Deschler Crosses with Swords.

Gordon has replied that the flaws on the "3" and lower reverse arm were "progressive"- that is to say they were not evident on the earlier Deschler Crosses but began to appear on the later ones.

Progressive???? The information that I am receiving is that there were TWO different die and a distinct weight difference resulting.

I personally do not think this is a progressive die flaw. I believe it's simply a result of the die maker's end result and that result under magnification... For this 'die' I think it should always be there.

I have just received a pm from a former member of this forum who states that the flaws were not progressive at all. He contends that Deschler had two dies- The first produced the heavier (43,3g) thicker crosses and the later produced the thinnner (38,5g) crosses. This later die had the flaw in the "3" and on the lower reverse arm.

He also states that the wreaths and pebbling differ between the two types.

                        Just for your info.

My 1 and 900 has the two flaws. I have the heavier one, 800 marked but this is a different die.

Stan, I'd agree with the 'former member' about the die flaw not being progressive. As was mentioned earlier, it seems odd such a rare award would require two dies. Can someone post a photo of the two side by side, first and second form? Perhaps they simply improved upon the design and that's all there was to it.

I have both and can scan them together. However I can not post so this could be on, http://stirnpanzer.com/forum/
