Despite the fact it's a small photo, it's one of the rarest I've seen so far: postwar picture of Oberstleutnant Franz Kieslich.

Still looking for one with better resolution..

After reunification in 1990, were former vets from East Germany given the opportunity to have these?

Hello ! Absolutely, and many, if not all did purchase the 57 pieces to replace their war time awards. And the Knights Cross winners flocked to joint the OdR. Tom

And they would of bought the late awards and crosses, including the "D" frame sand blasted RK's, much to the distaste of some here.............but they would of worn them with as much pride as any "B" frame first core version ! But then they would not of cared a jot what type they had !
                        Prost ! Steve.

The photo of Matheja, is one of the best RK close-up, in wear, shots I've seen!

That's pretty crazy to think about. You spend 40 years under a regime that didn't allow such things and then one day, you're allowed to wear them.

Did the DDR give pensions to former Werhmacht veterans?

Since my last visit to Germany was in 1988, I never met any of the Vets who had lived in the DDR. I wrote to all of the RKT's and received photos from all of them ! Tom
