    Navy Cap Tally Reference Thread

    I thought that it might be helpful to the collecting community to create a reference thread that would illustrate, and translate, various cap tallies used in the Japanese Navy (and perhaps the merchant fleet?) during the period of World War II.


    If you have any cap tallies, please post them!


    After the thread has gotten some traction, we'll pin this thread at the top of this section of the Forum for ease of reference in the future.

        This one is unknown to me. Any assistance in identifying it would be much appreciated!


        Update: Per Distinguished Contributor GHP in his post below, this tally is for the Imperial Navy battleship Yamashiro (Dai Nippon Gunkan Yamashiro)

              The cap tally worn by crew members of the cruiser Atago.
              Dai Nippon Gunkan Atago
              Greater Japan Warship Atago



              My original post, which incorrectly identified this tally, has been corrected based upon the identification by GHP, below.
              That is so that this thread will be easier to use as a reference.

                I believe that this tally relates to the Naval operations in the Kure Naval District, but I'm not able to be any more specific than that.

                  Dai Nippon Gunkan Izumo
                  Greater Japan Warship Izumo .

                            It was part of the 2nd Fleet; found this online:
                            第8驅逐隊-朝潮、滿潮、大潮、荒潮。
                            Comprised the following ships: Asashio, Manshio, Ōshio, Arashio
                            9. 大日本軍艦鳳翔
                            Dai Nippon Gunkan Hōshō
                            Greater Japan Warship [Aircraft Carrier] Hōshō

                            10. 馬公防備隊
                            Magong Bōbi-tai
                            Magong [Taiwan] Defense Corps
                            (I think that is the correct reading of the first 2 kanji)

                            11. 大日本帝国海軍
                            Dai Nippon Teikoku Kaigun
                            Greater Japan Imperial Navy
