Navy Cap Tally Reference Thread

I thought that it might be helpful to the collecting community to create a reference thread that would illustrate, and translate, various cap tallies used in the Japanese Navy (and perhaps the merchant fleet?) during the period of World War II.


If you have any cap tallies, please post them!

Update: Per Distinguished Contributor GHP in his post below, this tally is for the Imperial Navy battleship Yamashiro (Dai Nippon Gunkan Yamashiro)

I believe that this tally relates to the Naval operations in the Kure Naval District, but I'm not able to be any more specific than that.

The tally was worn by a crew member of the warship Izumo
Dai Nippon Gunkan Izumo
Greater Japan Warship Izumo .

This is a group of 11 tallies that are unknown to me.


If anyone can shed any light on them I would be grateful!

If this can be confirmed, or corrected if I am wrong, I would appreciate it very much.

It was part of the 2nd Fleet; found this online:

Comprised the following ships: Asashio, Manshio, Ōshio, Arashio

(I think that is the correct reading of the first 2 kanji)
