Speaking of the Izumo ... here's a certificate for winter kendo training in 1935. In the navy, Kendo was the traditional art; in the army it was bayonet fencing.

You can see Izumo's name in the center line: 出雲

    Cheers!

      Thank you, Guy!
It is my hope that anyone who is seeking information on Japanese Navy cap tallies will obtain a search engine result that will direct them to this thread. I believe that it is fair to say that, thanks to you, this thread is now one of the best English language references for identifying these pieces of history.

I really hope that other members will post cap tallies that they may have!

This is the designation for destroyers.

On a side note, there was a massive sell off of IJN tallies on YahooAuctions a few months back -- there were some pretty rare birds in that collection.

So I read Stu's post, copied the photograph and placed it in his post...
Only to then see that Guy had beat me to it!

                    Hey guys,

Im jealous of you guys with all your naval tallies. It cost a bit here in the uk. I was wondering, what would you look for in a genuine tally and the naval hat that might be with it?

Glad to help when I can. Although the translation said "officers" -- enlisted must also have attended (or have been staff?) since the cap is an enlisted cap.

                            Thoughts?

i think that the japanese gave the new guys in the academy enlisted uniforms because they are in training. When they graduate, they will get an officers uniform or the graduates will pay for their own uniform.

Thanks, I didn't think of that, but should have: I have photos of my father-in-law in the Sendai Officer Academy and he's dressed as an enlisted man. He graduated and ended the war as a captain of artillery.
