Holy Guacamole! Did you buy it before, or after, it was attributed? Nice oshigata as well.

Did you buy it straight from aoi art?
I have a showato with the remains of this sticker on a wooden scabbard with thin black lacquer and have owned several overs never seen it on an old or gendiato blade
I suppose the shop cattered for different pockets

Very Nice Bob!,Glad to see it being stored without the securing strap fastened! So many with the leather securing straps you see the strap has been torn in two by constant snapping and unsnapping. The inspectors probably didn't have a hard time slapping a sticker on that one! Best G.

Bob,that is a Very ornate Habaki ! Is there a Japanese name for this particular pattern of engraving? I have a sword with fittings with this style of engraving on them.

That foliage scroll design is called Karakusa-moyo 唐草模様、meaning Chinese style foliage design. It had origins in ancient Greece and came to Japan through China. It is a typical pattern for Furoshiki.

Sure! Think of it as an old sword re-purposed, cleaned & polished [maybe], re-mounted, quality controlled, shop-stickered, and sold.

It could have been purchased by a fairly well-off officer.
