    Hey Chuck,
I think if it was issued, it was likely to have been done very soon, by the condition, I doubt that it made it to the front,

      Gus,

What is your opinion of the liner pads in the helmet I posted? The leather or ? is very soft and smooth. They are tanned unlike any of ever seen in 35+ years of collecting these. The backsides of the liner fingers are colored/dyed also.

I've made arrangements with the seller to send it back tomorrow. Thanks to all for your input.

i have an M17 with a similar thicker brown leather liner, although one of the pads is the soft/thinner dirty white, as expected in an M17/18. liner looks untouched. could have been a wartime shortage of supple white leather or ?...
i tried to find it but no luck so far. a sure sign that i need to reduce my inventory i know i've posted pics of it on the Valhalla so i'll look there next...
i wouldn't write it off just yet. as someone mentioned, the key is to know for sure if the liner was ever removed. if there is any hint of that being so then i would return it too.

still can't find the helmet but found the next best thing, tons of pictures of it

what i found unusual about it, besides the brown leather mixed with the white, was the almost flat, non-lipped skirt edge.

here it is, hope it helps...

                Hey Chuch,
I missed the leather of the liner, the die on both sides is not a good sign, and the condition of the liner does not match the leather of the chin strap, I was tunnel visioned onto the hook and did not see the rest of the helmet.

I try not to collect M17,s with anything other than the white pads unless the piece has something to make up for it. JMO

I'm bringing this back to the top. Take a look at the M17 liner Brent Smith just sold on the estand... it's identical. It is listed with a stick grenade. I think I let a top shelf helmet slip away....

This is it right? sold a couple of days ago. He sold the chinstrap separate, wonder what happened to the little hook.

                        Eric,

I bought and paid for that helmet. The liner pads bugged the @#@# out of me so I returned it for a refund. No problems with the seller... he's as honest as they come. And yes... I watched it sell on ebay for over $800.00, and the chinstrap sold separately for over $200.00. There's a lesson to be learned here if the liner is original. Apparently somebody had no doubts about it.

I was watching but at that price, to much man. Only later did I realize it was the helmet Chuck was interested in. $270+ for the chinstrap. Is that a record?

I've seen original M16 chinstraps sell for well over $300.00. That chinstrap was as nice as they come, and $270.00 was a fair price paid.
