    Help with identifying award certificate

    Don't know anything about imperial awards, but hope somebody here can help me identify this family heirloom. If I can find out what the medal in question was, I'd like to try and find one. I assume it's just a regular 'been there done that' medal for a war in 1864 - unfortunately my ignorance of imperial Austria/Germany is so bad that I don't even recall from my history lessons what that war was all about.

    Can't make out what the written info says either - I think it identifies the regiment (or unit of some kind) that he was part of. Any ideas?

    I'd downsize it to fit here, but it seems like the writing would get too small to really be legible if I did that.

      Many thanks - thought it looked like that kind of thing.

      Is there perhaps a similar forum to this one where I could find out some more about the 1864 war, this medal, and other associated militaria?

        While I can't quite make out the entire inked inscription, it appears that he was in the 3rd Company, ____??? Pioneer Battalion #7. Not sure what that one word is.

              Ah, I love the collected knowledge of this forum. Am going to look that battallion up.

              The document is pretty cool, and I'm going to try and find one of those medals to buy in order to keep it with the document. Although being a family thing, it won't be sold, I'll have to attach some note to it though to make sure that it never gets sold as being THE medal that came with the document... I can see how unscrupulous characters can easily put together a fake 'group'.

                  The individual who signed the document was Gustav von Rohrscheidt (10.11.1820-30.03.1871). He was commander of Pionier Batl. Nr. 7 (Cologne) from 19.04.1864-30.10.1866, then commander of Pionier Batl. Nr. 9 (Harburg- near Hamburg) from 07.11.1866-03.04.1869. His last assignment was as the "Ingenieur vom Platz in Glogau"- the chief engineer officer in the Fortress of Glogau.

                    Actually the medal for thgis doc is the Austrian version with identical back but the cyphers reversed, i.e FJ-W.

                      Why would this document be for the Austrian version; it is clearly a Prussian doc? Or am I missing something that should be obvious?
