    I'm not so sure that case is period, looks a lot like the 1916 type case, although the cross on the outside of the lid appears to be earlier. Could we see more photos of the case?

          I agree with Sascha on the case, it looks correct for an 1870 EK1 based on the few I've seen. The major difference from the WWI examples is the imprint of the EK motif on the lid. The 1870s I've seen have a distinct design with very flared arms and a very narrow center, as yours does. Have you held it under a blacklight?

                        Here is an archives photo of a genuine case of an EK II 1870 and a case of a EK I 1870.

                        The main characteristic of an genuine case for an EK 1870 is the small gilt cross on the top of the case.
