    Post your grenzschild pictures

Here are the pics of my newly found grenzschild... made of metal alloy... quite nice in fact
    The front

    The back
These signs appear they were screwed onto the grenzpost ; you can see the two pitch holes.
On the left hand, two marks (see red arrows), maybe those of the place where the metal casting... has been rubbed down...

A close pic shows the rusted pitch inside the hole...

This grenzschild looks like original to me... but all comments and all other pictures welcome...

The picture below (from the cover of a 1997 West German magazine) gives the idea of the actual colour of the schild : whitish concrete colour... this colour does not appear on my pics due to the flash light... but the actual colour is that one :

    Olivier,

Congratulations on your acquisition of an East German Frontier Border Post Grenzschild. They are hard to come by, though the replicas are fairly easy to find, if not a bit costly to obtain.

The Grenzschilds found on the Frontier Border Posts were cast to a specific measurement as were the Posts themselves. The dimension of the Schilds were:
    a). Height - 27 1/2 cm
    b). Width - 21 1/2 cm

They were made of a metal alloy similar to that from which later production military award medals were die cast.

The replica Schilds are cast of aluminum in dimensions slightly smaller to the originals.

Following are two photos to show the differences (Front & Back) between each. The hole in the bottom part of the original (Left most Plaque)inadvertantly occurred during removal from the post.

One of the interesting aspects of these Frontier Border Post Schilds is that they apparently were placed into the concrete post as it was being poured. The metal posts to which they are attached inside the concrete are imbedded very deeply. Additionally, black, red and yellow paint can be observed on the reverse, indicating it was already mounted when the post was painted. Presumably, this process was done to make removal as difficult as possible. These posts were positioned fairly far out in front of the actual Frontier Border Fences, which sometimes were as far back as 50 or more so meters from the actual demarcation boundary line separating West and East Germany. Near the Posts were signs warning in German, English, French and Russian, that going up to the Post or beyond, would place one well into East German Territory.

Should this one be considered to be attach to one of those concrete posts?

            Hello Bryan,

Your Grenzschild certainly has the appearance of a real one. Congratulations.

I have been looking for an original myself. Very very nice to see this one.

Here are two pictures that I took at the border in '82 with the 11th AC.

                  Nice pics Jeff,

It amazed me how far in front of the actual frontier fence, these Grenzschild Posts sometimes were. I imagine when it became clear to all the "Wall" had fallen, there was a mad rush to these posts, and the Schilds suddenly and quite mysteriously, dissappeared.

                    Hi Rob

Here is a link where you can get those Grenz Signs for 155eur but I don't know if original, because they only show the front.

Whats the purpose of the circular "channel" around the top threaded hole shown in the first pics on this thread?

And why do some not have it?

Is the one on the ebay link original do you think? No channel but the paint is there... fake paint? No bids on it at 80E, suggests others think its duff.
