Whenever I get a new uniform, the first thing I do is rifle through the pockets looking for names or forgotten items. Sometimes the things left in the pockets can be almost as interesting as the uniform itself.
Once in a while, I get lucky and find a coin. But what I really love are the paper items. Paper gives a tantalizing glimpse into a brief moment of the soldier's life and brings a human touch to a musty old relic. Paper can also give us a glimpse at the prevailing culture of the time.
Without further adieu, here are a few of my intriguing discoveries that happened to be easily accessible for me to photograph.
First up, we have a Stasi administration tunic from the mid-70's. (Olivier, if you're reading this, I was so impressed with yours I had to get one of my own. Unfortunately mine doesn't have cuff bars.)
There are 2 identical library cards for a book about aquatic plants. On the back of one card is a list of some kind. Does anyone out there have a clue what the list might be?
