    Stuff in The Pockets

Whenever I get a new uniform, the first thing I do is rifle through the pockets looking for names or forgotten items. Sometimes the things left in the pockets can be almost as interesting as the uniform itself.

Once in a while, I get lucky and find a coin. But what I really love are the paper items. Paper gives a tantalizing glimpse into a brief moment of the soldier's life and brings a human touch to a musty old relic. Paper can also give us a glimpse at the prevailing culture of the time.

Without further adieu, here are a few of my intriguing discoveries that happened to be easily accessible for me to photograph.

First up, we have a Stasi administration tunic from the mid-70's. (Olivier, if you're reading this, I was so impressed with yours I had to get one of my own. Unfortunately mine doesn't have cuff bars.)

There are 2 identical library cards for a book about aquatic plants. On the back of one card is a list of some kind. Does anyone out there have a clue what the list might be?

Next up, we have a Navy Gesellschaft tunic. Inside was a program apparently for honoring the promotion of a General Doctor of Medicine. (Note the the Navy officer tunic has medical Dienstlaufbahnabzeichen.)

In addition to a couple boring speeches, there were a couple Mozart numbers performed. Cool!

A lottery ticket! Seems that this officer has been doing a bit of gambling. But it's OK, since this was apparently a state-sanctioned lottery - not the decadent, Vegas-style gambling.

His picks for this drawing are preserved forever. Guess it wasn't a lucky ticket, or else it wouldn't have wound up forgotten in his back pocket.

OK, visor hats don't have pockets, but this was too good to pass up. These ticket stubs were stashed behind the sweatband. If I hadn't turned the sweatband inside-out looking for a name, I never would have found them.

Didn't find a name, but these are almost as good. Tickets to a theatre performance in Dresden. I wonder how our dashing young officer's date went that night?

I presume "Goldenes Lamm" is the name of the play (or movie), but could it be the name of the theatre?

Thats my story, not very exciting.
A month ago, a tarnjacke arrived at home. I search in the pockets looking for some surprise. I found an screw, a metal piece for an shoulder board and one wedding ring!!
Since then I think from time to time in this so personal lost: get divorced and throw away the ring, or happy married and take off the ring trying not to scratch it during hard work and forget...
                        never knows

The only thing I ever found in a pocket was a hole.

I found a berlin haupstadt der ddr souvenir pin and one of the leftover portions of a paper ribbon sheet which says what medal the ribbon is for.
