Well, here's my completed Grenztruppen uniform. Going to wear it to the annual milsim/cosplay event this weekend.

This is with the overseas cap. I think this is the right thing to wear for a Grenzer at the Wall.

This is with a visor hat. I believe I can wear this for checkpoints?

Oh, and here is a tag that is sown onto the trousers.

I don't understand what it is though, all I recognize is the size of the trousers. I assume I should remove the thread that connects it to the pants to remove it from the trousers.

        What do you guys think?

The tag means the pants were never issued. This is the makers tag what was used for inventory and quality control purposes. I have these tags on uniforms that have check marks and initals that were done by workers as the item goes through the manufacturing process. It looks like yours has punch marks instead of initals. Some also have inspectors stamps for final approval. It also allowed you to see the size of the items without opening up the garmet and some will also have the date codes on them.

I do believe the side cap was only meant to be worn with the strichtarn??

I doubt it. There are photos out there of soldiers in the Grenztruppen wearing the side cap with the dress uniform on duty in Berlin.

I see. So to remove it I should just cut the thread that attaches it to the pants right? Thanks for the help.

Certainly not with the dress uniform. it sais so in the vorschriften. tellermutze or schirmmutze. possibly it is the dutyuniform with agreement of the commanding officer as a side cap is alot more comforteble then a schirmmutze.

The Feldmütze is correct with the Dienstuniform. For the Ausgangsuniform, it would be the Schirmütze only. The Dienstuniform would include the Gurtkoppel, or grey web belt. The Lederkoppel, leather belt would be correct with the Ausgangs- or Paradeuniformen. Normally for the NVA, but we're discussing Grenztruppen.

The Grenzer serving in the Staatskapital (80's on) would be issued the gaberdine material uniform, and required to wear the shirt and tie with Schirmütze as such:

vice the standard Dienstuniform as seen worn here:

Hope to see some photos from the event Johelmet!

Ah, I seemed to have got my terms muddled up. I meant duty uniform, not dress uniform. I know soldiers in the NVA each got a parade tunic and a service tunic.

Genosse Helmet does wear the side cap properly with the wool tunic buttoned up to the collar. This would be the barracks or duty order of dress, however I believe the visor cap should be worn with an open collar, dress shirt and tie for an enlisted man.
