    Andreas,

Your picture of the DFD Halskette aroused my interest so I did some research on it. There was also a gold necklace with blue cloth and white lettering that was only given to foreigners. Does anyone have one of these cases that they could post a picture of?
What does the top of the case for your DFD silver halskette look like?

    Regards,

    Gordon

At the beginning of this thread Andreas listed a few of the commonly found cases issued by the DDR for their awards. In some subsequent posts by speedytop and olivyaya they showed that within one specific medal there can be several variations in cases. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to be 100% sure that we could say X case was produced between "n" year and "m". However, it is interesting, at least to me, to see some variations between similar cases so I decided to take a set of Bronze, Silver and Gold verdienstmedaille der Deutschen Post (19.11.1970) and compare them.

      The bronze award.
It is in a cardboard box the same as the other two in size and construction but the paper used on the outside of the box is smooth. The medal itself, has what we called several years ago the "second" type catch.

The silver and the gold awards come in case with a rougher finish resembling leather. They also have the last catch used. Also interesting to note the IS has a plastic cover on it.

I've included the tops and bottoms of the cases as an illustration that, in at least these medals, they are the same. Considerable time and effort was expended by a field of mine in analyzing the tops and bottoms (scuff plates) of Hungarian award cases and he was able to date, at least the case, to a fairly specific manufacturing time frame because of this study. While the top of the cases remained fairly constant throughout the issue period of the award the colour of the scuff plate often changed. Sometimes more than once during the lifetime of the award. So far, I have not seen this happen in DDR awards.

Thanks Gordon and Thälmannpionier for your additional cases posts. Interesting to see other cases.

bringing back this thread with one interesting case i just got today..

I'd have not thought to find something DDR related in that one but its guaranteed original to it as I was personally told by the former owner who had won it in the 50s.
case is constructed like pre45..maybe old stock?

this medal was also new to me...had never seen before but its a looker.
I still only use the very old bartels book but its not in there.
it was awarded for kind of Championship of the Jungpioniere. He was awarded it as Swimmer.

I've not ever seen these type of cases before, and the medals are new to me as well. They are very, very nice.

                          Thanks for posting them.

                            Andreas,

Very nice set of cased medals. Especially the 1955 dated one. Since the cases all seem to be identical they are probably all from the same time frame.

I need to do some research on these medallions to see if I can find any info on them. I like the clasps on the cases and medallions could be its own thread.

                              Very interesting indeed.

                                Andreas,

Can we see a picture of the backs of these medallions and a closeup of the front and back of the small ones.

                                Regards,
