Here is a Volksmarine officer oath from the 60's. (if you want a better picture just ask).

I don't believe the oath was a problem for the transfer in the BW, the first problem was the huge number of officers in the NVA and the way they were trained. BTW, I believe that Dirk served 1 year in the Bundeswehr after the reuification.

Thanks for the info.

I was there when the transition took place, and every evening on German Television, there were updates with respect to how the transition and integration was going. I recall very clearly that there was a big deal being made about an additional line in the oath taken by officers that was not present in the oath taken by other ranks, that was looked upon by the former West German Politburo as unacceptable. I cannot today recall what the language difference (just a simple line/sentence) was between the two, but it was profound, and initially for a few weeks, there was talk of not permitting any officers at all the right to transition to the Bundeswehr. But then after a time, they permitted former NVA junior officers the opportunity to transition if they desired to do so. Many of course did not, due the fact most were required to step down in rank a grade or two.

Olivier - I didn't say none. I said at the very beginning virtually none. I also went on to say that after a few weeks (After much heated debate) they permitted NVA junior officers the option of switching over to the Bundeswehr, but ususally with a one to two rank deduction.

Gents,
there was the "unit flag oath" which every NVA member had to swear.
And than we as professional officers had to swear the "oficer´s vow" (Offiziersgelöbnis), if we were declaired to Lieutenants.
In the Grenztruppen it was similar.


Afterthe unificazion of NVA and Bundeswehr we had to swear the Bundeswehr oath. But I only took place and don´t speak the oath. Because they cancelled me, and I did know that already at this moment...
I was in the Bundeswehr from October 1990 to April 1991....
