    Hi Gordon,

    I was thinking I need to do the same thing. I'll try and take pictures this weekend.

    Looking at this picture again, I think the loader is wearing the specialized Luftlande trousers. This was also made in 1956 and was more similar to the standard Splittertarn trousers, except that it had two rear pockets each with one snap closure instead of a button. I think I see exactly that in this picture. The other major difference is straps to close the ankles, similar to what we can see on the soldier's sleeves.

    Now, as far as I know this type of trousers are called Luftlande simply because LL Div tested them out, not because they were explicitly made for them. But maybe they were, I don't know. But if the picture is of GJ, and the back of the photo does imply that, then it seems that the uniform was tested (even if unofficially) by GJ as well as LL.

    In fact, the GJ and LL trousers share similar features except that the GJ trousers are short and the LL ones long. So it is possible that the jacket was the same for both.

    Interesting!

    For me, the Holy Grail (impossible to find) items for Splittertarn are:

    1. GJ (or perhaps LL or perhaps both) jacket as seen in this picture

    2. "Reverse Broad Splinter" trousers (I have never even seen a picture of one, but it most likely exists as I have the jacket and hood)

    3. FJ "Green Splinter" trousers

    4. Broad Splinter snow trousers

    5. Palm leaf (related to Splittertarn) snow set of top and bottom

    6. Wehrmacht colored Splittertarn set (I know of one jacket, so I assume trousers too)

    7. Late model Splittertarn trousers with integrated leg ties

    As far as I know these are the only items I lack, but I don't think I have much of a chance of getting except for #7. I've seen a couple of those for sale, but have not been successful in landing one.

          One Ugly Hombre

          Gentlemen,

          As many of you know, I am fascinated with other ugly men, especially Bundeswehr types.

          I have to tell you though, that this guy sets a new standard of ugly....

          His Kragenspiel are very light; I'm guessing Signal Corps, Aviation or Musician.

          What say you?

          Many thanks,
          TJ

          P.S. - Don't study the photo for too long, or you'll risk turning into a pillar of salt...

                    Gents,

                    You'll be happy to know that the below Soldat is a fairly good looking lad. What's odd about him is his Schiffen.

                    Can anyone venture a guess as to why his headgear is so dark?

                    Many thanks,
                    TJ

                    P.S. RamJet I hope you have recovered from your earlier shock; my apologies for not offering fair warning.

                      Gents,

                      I like this happy guy with a jaunty cap and pointy epaulettes. The picture is from a studio in Koblenz.

                      Those early BW soldiers really knew how to style a sharp looking tie knot.

                      All the best,
                      TJ

                        Thought I would share a scan of this newspaper article picture from 1965. Depicted is the first CO of Raketenartilleriebataillon 122 in Phillipsburg.
                        Please notice the German and U.S. Airborne wings beside the shoulder sleeve Airborne insignia on his right sleeve and the 1957er ribbon bar. You'll find the unit history here:

                          Gents,

                          This one arrived today and seemed a little out of the ordinary for a formal portrait.

                          Can anyone tell what school the patch represents?

                          Many thanks,

                            TJ,

                            The L stands for Lehrtruppenteile. There were for badges of this type and the coloured piping identified the school.
                            1-Silver piping with black stripes-Artillery School;
                            2-Red (hochrote) Pionierschule und Fachschule des Heeres fur Bautechnik;
                            3-Black (Schwarze) Panzertruppenschule;
                            4-Rosa (pink) Panzerlehrbrigade 9.

                            Your picture would appear to be for the Panzertruppenschule.

                            Interesting cap badge. I don't ever remembering seeing the swords worn on the schiffchen before.

                            Regards,

                            Gordon

                              Gordon,

                              I'm afraid something got mixed up with the piping of the Schul-/Lehrtruppen patches.

                              In fact the piping of the patch is the Waffenfarbe of the specific branch. Red = Artillery, black = Engineers, pink = Armor etc. with some exceptions. Silver with black stripes is for Offizierschule and Unteroffizierschule; green with white stipes is for Luftlandeschule.

                              Because of the dark piping my guess is that Herr Gefreiter was most likely a member of either a Pionierlehrbataillon, Instandsetzungs-/Nachschublehrbataillon, Sanitätslehrbataillon or ABC-Abwehr Lehrbataillon.

                                Lars,

                                Thanks for your comments. Perhaps I misunderstood what Kunstwadl said in his book but I thought that I had translated it correctly. I'll have to check that again.
