Klaus, you got me... the ideal spade was invented in 1959, in 1957 the Grenni should have carried the older type across the chest...

Michel, if the pouch for the tarp is enough for the start I´ll send you a link...

      Michel,
here are couple thread that discussed West German shovels. The straight version is similar to WW2, but black leather cover has rivets. I think blade are painted grey or olive and not black. They were used by Bw and BGS, I posted good photo from BGS in another thread. There is photo in book I have of Bw in splittertarn with one. I still search after one, they are not easy to find.

Do you have the olive early Feldmütze too? I had one but sold it after I stopped to collect Bw items.

        Michel,

Having mixed colors is fine. Like so many other color variations of uniforms, the supply depots didn't care so a mix is very normal. I just mentioned it because in theory the earlier you try to portray the more correct green would be vs. blue. I forget when blue was first produced, but by 1957 both were being used for sure.

@ Jens: I only saw the across-the-chest-spaten in pictures with the Arbeitsanzug and with the early Parkas, so I never thought of using them on a Splitter uniform.
The pouch would already be cool, since I never saw them yet, maybe they're all offered as WW2 pouches or something :P

@ Klaus: Yes I do have the olive Feldmütze with the crossed swords under the threecolor, I also have the early Luftwaffe Feldmütze.
I have a straight Spaten with riveted carrier, but it's the grained leather and has the rivets at slightly different paes, I'll try to make a picture tomorrow, could be NVA though.

          Cheers,
          Michel

I have not seen welded spades used by West Germans, but East Germans yes. I think also, West German spades covers have open back and normally smooth leather. Early East German spades (1950s) are riveted and came with riveted covers too. I am not sure if back of cover is solid or pebble texture. I thought welded East German spades had no rivets on handle though.

              East German straight spades:

                spaten

Well it's weird since the straps are of smooth leather, the open side is pebbled leather, which is the same as the NVA straight Spaten cover I have (with the belt loops not portruding above the cover), but the back is completely different, it's like there are a lot of little dents or pits in it, never seen it before.
Do You perhaps have an idea if they're were also other countries whch used this model Spaten?

                Cheers,
                Michel

Early East German covers had belt loops like WW2 covers, so shovel hangs lower than later ones. I would post this in the DDR forum and see if they have any ideas.

The few other countries that might used such spade, like Austria or Norway, had brown leather field equipment.

                  regards

I've used a general rule of thumb that if it has a pebble grain that it is DDR unless proven otherwise. I know, I know... it's not a fantastic rule, however as a starting assumption I think it's pretty good. At least it helps figure out which sort of forum to post a question to, which is why Klaus' suggestion of posting to the DDR forum is really good. And if they don't know what it is, then it is likely BRD of some sort, but not necessarily BW.

                        bw strap?

I have this strap, it came in with a big load of BW straps, is this also BW? I thought if it is it would be from an older period so I posted it here:

                        Cheers,

Michel - Very interesting indeed. I'll see what I can find in my references.

At first glance, I thought it was the early trouser belt.

                          All the best - TJ

The webbing and the strap end looks familiar ... but the buckle is 100% unknown to me...

                              strap

TJ, I know that I have seen it somewhere, but I haven't found it in my reference yet, but it's not a trouser belt as it is pack strap length and so will not fit around a waist

Asbjoern, the webbing and the end pice are the same as some of the different kinds of BW straps that I have, and I know I have seen the buckle somewhere, to me it seems BW as it came in a bundle of 50 BW straps

                              Cheers,
                              Michel

                                Michel,

I've not seen this type of buckle either. Will it fit around a messkit? It looks like a good buckle design for that use.
