nice uniform set! Your uniform is version for ground troops, not Fallischirmjäger. FJ version is slightly different, like Gordon said.

    TJ,
interesting you mention they were withdrawn 1959. I have seen several photos from same exercise that say 1960 (latest I have seen). Maybe mis-dated?

    Klaus,

I didn't say the uniform was from Fallschirmjager just that the trousers might be. Pictures of this uniiform don't show the tabs on the sides of the trousers that button to make them tighter.

    TJ,

All items of clothing have a "wear out" period. It can take up to three to four years for a uniform to be completely replaced. No doubt this uniform saw lots of wear before they were all replaced by the Filzlaus uniform.

    Regards,

    Gordon

      Gentlemen,

Hugh Zillman sent me a couple of photo of the cammo uniform he believes shows them in wear in the early 60s. This is the first one.

      Regards,

      Gordon

And the second one he feels is from 1962.

          Gordon,
I know you know it is not FJ. The original poster said that maybe his uniform is worn out because FJ wear it. It was correction of what he said.

A couple from manuevers in 1960. These are photos I referred to earlier that I found on internet. The vehicles and equipment are worth mention too.

Hello Gents - I thought I'd add a photo from the collection to keep our discussion on "splinter camo" flowing.

Here we see a rather jaunty looking M48 tank crewman complete with shirt and tie (I couldn't possibly conceive of ever wearing collar and tie as part of my field uniform back in the day); binoculars; and M43 style hat with fold down sides. I can't tell his rank or what style of lace-up boots he's wearing. He also appears to have the remains of a cigarette butt in his left hand. He right hand is clad in what we in the U.S. Army used to refer to as "Air Force gloves".

At his side, worn "cross draw" style, is a Colt .45 automatic (M1911). Here's a quick note on these weapons from the infamous BW monograph that lurks neglected on my hard drive:

Bundeswehr soldiers were issued Colt.45 M1911 and M1911A pistols through the U.S. Mutual Defense Assistance Program (MDAP) . Taken into Bundeswehr service as the P51 and P52, they were also known as the “Colt government model.” They were unpopular due to perceived excess weight (the M1911 comes in at just under 3 pounds) and had to fight against the longstanding German tradition of using 9mm handguns like the P.08 “Luger” and P38 of World War II fame. The M1911 was carried in a copy of the G.I. holster manufactured in natural brown leather (less the “U.S.” insignia embossed on the flap). The M1911 was not missed at all when replaced with the P1, a post-war version of the P38 in 1958.

I'll be back next with some comments on the wonderful pictures suppled by Hugh and Klaus.

            All the best - TJ

              Hi TJ,

the soldier could be a M48 crew man, but the tank in the background is a M47 (see the picture above) .

Since March 1957 (13. März 1957) it was no longer allowed, to wear the tie and the grey-blue shirt with the "Kampfanzug" .
It was the same for the "Arbeitsanzug".
"Das graublaue Diensthemd (shirt) und der Langbinder (tie) sind zum Ausgeh- und zum Dienstanzug (Tuchbekleidung) bestimmt." = determined for the service dress.

Uwe - Thanks for the correction

I'm glad to hear the neck tie was dropped from the dress regulations fairly quickly.

Did you wear one with field dress?

                Thanks - TJ

                  TJ,

"Did you wear one with field dress?"

No, never; but the "Affenjacke" with the field uniform, for the meals .

Great photo TJ! I do not think I have seen many colour photos of splittertarn Bw uniforms in field.

I forgot to mention on photos I posted that one can see clear how canteen was attached to kleine Kampftasche.

                    regards

Cool pic, looks like he might have the whole service dress uniform on underneath his splittertarn anzug; you can see a lapel showing. Anybody have pics of rank insignia being worn on splittertarn?

allen - If you look closely at the above picture supplied by Hugh, you can see a Gefreiter's stripe on the man on the far left.

Team - Another color photo of the Splittertarn battle dress taken from the 1962 edition of the Deutscher Soldaten Kalendar.

Presumably, the "Schiffen" style caps are of the "felt louse" material, although I suppose they could be wearing dress caps.

The figure in the middle appears to be wearing a an olive drab "M1959" parka.

                          Comments anyone?

                          Thanks - TJ

                            Hood

I have a question, I have a jacket, a hood and the gloves. Was there a change in the number of buttons to attach the hood to at some point? Or maybe it differs with different sizes? I'm asking because my jacket has 5 buttons under the collar, and the hood has only 4

                              Michel,

An interesting question. I only have one jacket and hood and they each have five snap fasteners.

                              Regards,

                                splitter

I think I'll start another thread tomorrow to show off soms things I bought that go with the Splitter Uniform. Also a Picture of the hood, maybe someone knows why it only had 4 buttons, I would rather have it with 5 so I can attach it to the Jacket
