The Bundeswehr M1 Helmet

Hi fellow collectors ,

today the postman brought this helmet , it is another
"Schwedenhelm" with the Römer liner.
This helmet as you can see has been worn by at least two soldiers and
also been stored in an unfriendly environment.

As you can see this helmet is from 1958.

I am still unsure about the meaning of the "3"
Could be the size of the shell - or- the third month of `58.
Don`t know.

Interresting detail is that the 1958 and 1959 helmets with
the Römer liner have non detachable chinstraps whereas the two
M1A1`s from 1961 and 1962 have both detachable chinstraps.
Here we can see the bale on the 1958 helmet.

All in all not too bad for a helmet that only costs one Euro.

Bernhard - I wish I had an early BW M1 helmet to show!

I thought I had two, but by using your detailed photos to compare with my examples, it turns out that one was a U.S. M1 and the other was Austrian.

I have the Baer book and had seen the examples on display at both the Technical Museum in Koblenz and the Panzer Museum in Muenster, but it wasn't until you posted photos of your collection that I realized that I was mistaken.

Yet another classic example of how the WAF Forum can humble a longtime collector!

Uhlan,The soldier on the cover of the magazine appears to be carrying the Bundeswehr G1 which is their version of the Belgian FN.

Hi fellow Collectors ,

For all those that are interrested in the Bundeswehr helmet , I would like to add some more pictures for your information.

I suppose that when these M1A helmets were issued to the individual soldier the helmet had this sticker shown in the pics below.
Unfortunately I do not have a time frame for this , but as you can imagine this sticker would have been removed by the soldier sooner or later...

It is just an information on how to adjust the liner on one`s headsize.

I have not shown the issue helmet net before , so here we go !
This type of netting was adopted in march 1963 and stayed in use up till
the invention of the Gefechtshelm.

After the M1A1 helmet stayed in service for nearly two decades the time
for making some improvements came when in february 1981 the
I 60 , Innenaustattung 60 was modified.
The new interior made some significant improvements and modification of the M1A1 started.

Here we have a M1A1modifiziert , as was also the official designation given by the Bundeswehr.
