Even though my German language skill is basic at best after I started to get into the movie I found myself paying more attention to the dialog than to the subtitles.

    Greg

    - So it sounds like if I am to order the double disk version it has the English subtitles on it?
Don't think it has been released for Region 1 yet Greg ... unless you zap your DVD player as suggested above

Instead of waiting for October for the North American DVD release I'm tempted to pick up another DVD player and mod it to region free. That's how much this movie rocks.

It only played at one small arthouse theater in New York City and only for two weeks or so. The reason is simple...it isn't exactly a mainstream film and movies like this don't attract huge audiences, so big theaters probably would make more money showing the latest teen sex comedy (likewise movie theaters make more of a profit from concessions than ticket sales. The audience for The Downfall isn't exactly the popcorn and candy crowd). And most big movie houses tend to avoid anything that could be seen as raising any controversy.

Regarding the region-free DVD players. My recommendation is to look on eBay and just buy one already modified. You can try and look online and find the codes that unlock the regions but this could in fact lock up the player and void the warranty. I paid $35 plus almost $30 for shipping but got a great Philips region-free DVD player on eBay. It supports DTS, has two component outputs and both optical and coaxial digital audio. Two years ago this was a $400+ player. $35 on eBay! Can't go wrong with that one.

I watched it this weekend, the only place that it is showing around me is in by Chicago and it has just gotten into the suburbs. I do have to agree with everyone that it is a good movie.

I liked "Downfall" but there is another good german movie out there now..its called "NAPOLA" (Nationalpolitische Erziehungsanstalt) if you ever get the chance to watch it,do so,even if it's not translated into english.I think y'all gonna enjoy it..This film which depicts an elite Nazi teenage male youth training facility takes place in Germany during 1941 or 1942. Students are being trained to become future leaders after Germany wins the war. Much of the training is brutal. Students are taught to win regardless of any pain that their actions might cause their fellow man - whether friend or foe, fellow countryman or enemy. The film tells how the students accept or reject their training and the consequences of their decisions/indecisions.
                cheers

That's ironic Peter as i just saw the figures for our new multi-screen cinema that opened recently where i live (norway) and Der Untergang had the highest viewing figures by far. I was surprised myself, i thought it would have been a niche film but when i went to see it there were far more teens in the audience than i would ever have thought.

I went to see it again last night in Dublin with forum member paddywhack and although shown in one of the cinema's smaller screens it was absolutely packed out (I think they may even have accidently oversold it?). I was glad we got there early as it was free plan seating It was the same story when I saw it in Toronto 3 weeks ago (Absolutely packed!). It is getting very good press and good word of mouth too hence large crowd turnouts!

                          Hello All

Just got back from seeing DOWNFALL and found it to be a really great movie. I went with a fellow forum member (TINMANTIS) and both of us hope to see it again. I would highly recommend this movie to all members and intend to purchase a DVD copy once it becomes available in the US.

                          Best Regards
                          Mike

So you're saying you didn't like it enough to buy a region free DVD player and the German DVD from Amazon.de?
