      Favourites

I really like a good variety of war films, I don't like to stick to one war.

"Beast of War" was a stand-out for me. For those that haven't seen it, it is about a Russian tank that gets separated from the main column in Afganistan. Best bit? Shock waves tearing up the dust as the rounds shoot across a valley floor into a village.....

Also the Russian movie simply called "War", set in Chetnya.

      "Gallipoli"
      "A Bridge Too Far"
      "Blackhawk Down"
      "Stalingrad"
      "Das Boot"
      "Apocalypse Now"
      "Downfall"

I can't really pick a favourite out of this lot, though as a Navy type, I can relate to Das Boot.

      Regards;
      Johnsy

Aave Johns That is a great film but I think the title is THE BEAST. and is the only film out about the Russian conflict in Afghanistan.

Yes that is the title, 'The Beast' from A & M Films, 1988, colour, 104 minutes.
Producers: Christopher Dalton, John Fiedler, Gil Friesen, Dale Pollock; Director: Kevin Reynolds; Screenwriter: William Mastrosimone; Filmed in Israel; Cast: Erick Avari, Claude Aviram, Stephen Baldwin, Beni Baruchin, Steven Bauer, Kabir Bedi, George Dzundza, Avi Gil-Or, Chaim Girafe, Don Harvey, Rami Heuberger, Avi keedar, Victor ken, Shoshi Marciano, Osnat Mor, Itzhak Bbi Neeman, Jason Patrie, Roberto Pollack, David Sherrill, Mashe Vapnik.

During the war in Afghanistan, a Soviet tank crew commanded by a tryannical officer struggles to get back to their own lines through the mountains, but they are pursued by a band of Mujahideen guerillas bent on their destruction.

The movie is based on William Mastrosimone's book 'Nanawatai: A Play in Two Acts'. (New York: S. French, 1986).

A quote from the movie: Daskal: "Out of commission, become a pillbox, Out of ammo, become a bunker. Out of time, become heroes."

Info from the book 'The Encyclopedia of War Movies' by Robert Davenport.

            Cheers

Another great movie which doesn't seem to rate much of a mention at all, is:

'The One That Got Away', British Film Productions, Julian Wintle Production, 1957, B & W, 106 minutes.

Producers: David Deutsch, Julian Wintle; Director: Roy Ward Baker; Screenwriters: Kendal Burt, Howard Clewes, James Leasor; Distributor: Rank Organisation; Cast: Terence Alexander, Robert Crewdson, Robert Dorning, Andrew Faulds, Michael Goodliffe, Colin Gordon, Jack Gwyllim, Paul Hansard, Frederick Jaeger, Hardy Krueger, Harry Lockart, Richard Marner, Alec McCowen, George Mikell, George Roubicek, Julian Somers, John Van Eyssen.

The movie is based on the true story of Oberleutnant Franz von Werra, the only German prisoner of war taken to Britain during world war II who escaped and got back to Germany.

I have a copy of this on VHS, and it is the only remaining tape of mine, as I have my other favourites on DVD but this one doesn't seem to be released on DVD at this time. It is a great story, and a lot of effort was put in to getting the uniforms etc correct for this movie.

It was called "The Beast" in the US, but "The Beast of War" in most other places. Check this link www.imdb.com/title/tt0094716

You can properly spell Fallschirmjaeger yet this sentence makes makes no sense to me!

Seriously try capitalizing the letters so we can better understand what you're trying to say! Some good choices by the way!

A wonderful film about the cynical waste of life inflicted on the front line soldier during WW1. Great central performance by Kirk Douglas.
<center>Some years ago I purchased a French 701st Infantry Regiment flag,
and found out later that French infantry unit numbers didn't go up
that high! My 701st flag turned out to be from the "Paths of Glory"
movie and can be seen in the end of the film just before they shoot
the French soldiers - I was amazed at the detailed embroidery quality
of my 701st movie prop flag especially when only used for a few
seconds on camera! These days I hang out mostly online waiting for
