It's a downright shame this book isn't available in English. Was the author a Mg'er? Wonder exactly where his position was located? Surely he traveled back to that beach? Would love to read the German perspective of that battle.

The History Channel made a programme (shown in UK) for the 60th anniversay of d-day about Severloh and its a very moving programme. He was deeply disturbed by what had happened for the rest of his days. It shows him going back to the beach and meeting up with a GI he had injured. Fantastic programme.

Most of my favorite WWII memoirs have been written by Germans. Especially those who served as landsers on the Eastern Front.

The read on Wikepedia was good, but being able to read the book would be absolutely great. It's good to be able to read the accounts of German soldiers.

Interestingly, I took this picture at Omaha beach this summer before reading the book, and it just happens to be that this is almost exactly where the author was positioned when firing his MG on D Day.

Nice pictures, thanks. How come he was so far back? or would he be closer to the edge?
Seems you cant see much of the beach from this distance.

Does anybody know who the German publisher is or the French publisher?
                    Thanks, Ant.

The french editor is Heimdal: http://www.6juin1944.com/biblio/index.php?id=63

LDR, the actual position the author was in was more forwards of what my photo shows, around where you can see a tree sticking up.

Even an MG 42 wont reach your enemy, if there is a hill between you and him!

I think he was trying to show the commanding ground and trench sytem of the German defenders. I'm sure he has beach photos too. Regardless, nice shot!
