The Russian Come And See from 1985 is odd to sy the least. I had trouble watching it. The beginning is terrible but it does get better as the story unfolds. Strange as hell though.

It's not quite a movie and I don't think it is available on DVD, but back in the mid 90's, there was a television show out called "Young Indiana Jones." Some of them were very good and it was an overall interesting program.

The one episode that I have always really liked is called "Trenches of Hell." In my opinion, it is one of the best depictions of the conditions of trench warfare. I have this episode on VHS, but like I said, I have never been able to find it or any of the other episodes on DVD.

        Best,

        Chris

Under the mindless fun category, Dogs of War I love that movie, more of a merc movie. The book is outstanding.

I'd like to know why Das Boot isn't up there with 5 stars. About the only thing you can pick it up for is compressing events that happened on many war cruises into one.

Nice to see BOB chosen above SPR as i understand they tried to right a lot of the faults from the film.

I'd also put the Battle of Britain up there. Yes there are some iritating faux-pas but the very fact that they went to the massive trouble of using real authentic aircraft in the days long before CGI and when WWII vintage aircraft were hard to come by i think deserves praise (yes yes they were Spanish Me109s and He111 but they were at least 109s and 111s)

just wondering because I thought the movie was supposed to be pretty accurate.

I have never read the accounts, and of course, due to the terrible russian propaganda, you have to wonder that any russian sources, and some of the german sources, were untrue to begin with.

If you search over on the Axis history forum and Feldgrau you'll find a lot of info about the story, which has been well and truly debunked.

Personally, I thought that "Saving Private Ryan" was silly, typical Hollywood hokum. Even in Schindler's List they had to play with the facts. It wasn't enough that Oskar Schindler risked his life to save men and women and children. No, they had to show him (with Ben Kingley) actually dictating the list as it was typed, personally giving Kingsley the names of people to be saved. In fact that did not happen. The list was compiled by Schindler's functionaries, who were not above taking bribes from prisoners to place their names on the lists. But that reality didn't fit in with the apparent need of Hollywood to elevate Schindler from a brave and committed humanitarian to outright saint.

By comparison is "The Big Red One". It was directed by Samuel Fuller, who was himself on Omaha beach on D-Day as an infantryman with the First Infantry Division. Fuller believed that it would be impossible for any filmaker to try to depict what the battle on Omaha had been like. Therefore, in his film, he focused on one of the first men killed on the beach and, specifically, his wristwatch. As the time passes on the watch you see the water swirling around the man's wrist go from sea-green to pink to red. The film was not meant to be a true account of actual men, but having been directed by Fuller, I've always thought that it must have accurately captured the essence of those infantrymen in combat.

As for Breaker Morant, at least as of a few years ago, that film was shown as part of the training process for new Navy and Marine Corps military lawyers.

                        Gentlemen,
IMHO, I would add "Pork Chop Hill". excellent depiction of an infantry assault to take a hill, "Twelve O'Clock High", an all-time classic, and a movie that seems to be often overlooked, but a great depiction of the desperate days of 1941-42 in the Phillipines, "They Were Expendable".

                          Good War Movies

I think The Winter War is one of the best war movies ever!!!!!

Here are some others I enjoyed.

The Pianist is really good showing life in Poland during WW2.

Escape from Sobibor I always thought was well done.

Two neglected American films are A Midnight Clear and When Trumpets Fade

The Bridge (Die Brücke) is a good German film made right after the war.

People may argue but I thought there were some great scenes in Slaughterhouse 5.

                            19th century war movies

I forgot to add that I think The Alamo with Billy Thorton is excellent.

Also, though not out on DVD and a lousy characterization, Son of the Morning Star is about the best version of the Little Bighorn I have seen on film.

                              Hello,
Thank you for mentioning "Son of the Morning Star". I so wish it would be released on DVD, as IMHO, it is by far the best "Custer" movie, and it follows actual events quite closely. The uniforms are done well also.

                                Son of the Morning Star

                                Robert,

My only issue with the movie is they really didn't get Custer's character right. In the movie he is too strident. However, for the battles they used reenactors and they got they essence of the Little Bighorn correct. However we are still waiting for the definitive Little Bighorn movie in my humble opinion. However, compared to everything that has come before this is the best. Mike
