When you see the photos of the men , both Russian and German who died at Stalingrad the utter waste of it all is tangible , so many empty chairs, photographs on walls which will never speak yet they seem to have so much to say , holding their peace and pain for eternity - sad homes.

Thank you for posting the picture of my wifes great uncle, He had been a very active sports member and had won quite a few awards, Her grandmother would sit and tells us what a nice boy he was and then just as if it had been yesterday would break down and cry about him never coming home from Stalingrad. He was never brought home as far as we know and all the family received was the Death Card. Poor Souls who gave their all no matter what country or politics....

Felix, thanks so much for posting these - they are my favorite kind of thread on the Forum! One tiny correction - the tank described as a long-barreled T-34 in post #32 is actually a Josef Stalin.

                Awesome thread!

Hi Felix, Thanks for posting pictures of Moscow and Volgograd and valuable tips about planning trip to Russia! Your pictures are very cool and I enjoyed reading the comments about Volgograd and Battle of Stalingrad. The giant Mother Russia statue is so awesome in sight. I enjoyed your threads on your trip to Russia!

Thanks to all for your kind comments and the interest in the thread.

Yes, there are many interesting places to visit and Russia offers quite a few historical and interesting sites to be seen. Will try to visit more battlefields when time allows.

Sorry, but no more pics of the "guide" as she became my GF.

The tank might be a JS one, It is not my field so I take it youre correct.

                      Cheers and thanks

                        Congrats with your girlfriend guide
Found my girlfriend guide in Russia as well
In May I will be back to Moscow for the Victory parade and I'll also take a trip south, joining a history teacher to a huge tank museum...and hopefully from there to a place where now and then grounddugs can be found. Hope to be lucky myself in this hehe. And hopefully to Volgograd later this year

Thoroughly entertaining, and it all looks so pleasant and sunny, no wonder the westerners got caught out when it all turned to swampland and icicles. Anyone else got unusual wartime holiday pics ?
