Trip to Bastogne anyone?

This is the last one for now. On the way to or back from Bastogne, you must stop at the German WW2 cemetary at Recogne. It is about 7 kilometers outside of Bastogne. Here you can lay a wreath or make a donation to the care of the grounds. It is a very somber place as you can imagine.

Since I live in Belgium at about 2 hours driving from Bastogne, I'm also interested in coming (only saturday unfortunatly).
If you like, I can come with a mini-van (for some 8 persons).
For some years, i gave a tourist trip in the vicinity of La Gleize. Starting from Baugnez (the malmedy massacre), taking the original route from Kampfgruppe Peiper towards Stoumont station (where he was stopped).
I speak Flemisch (Dutch), english, german and french. So that is not a problem.
You also have the german cemetary of Recogne and in the village of Houffalize, there is a Panther tank.
Lots of stuff to see and I wouldn't mind to show you around.
If Dion comes with his car and I with my van and maybe Kale with his car, we will have enough place to drive everybody around.
If Dion also knows a good place to dig, I can bring my White's Pro6000 detector also
But I don't know if we are going to have enough time for doing it all.
Just let me know what you all think.

[We have a VW Golf, not very much room but should be ok. I was in contact with a man who turned up a lot of KM guys stuff while digging. Yes KM guys fought at the Bulge. I went one time before but accidentally didnt follow his directions and found nothing. I know how to do it now, By the old train station take a right and follow the tracks,,how many km I do not remember, but I will search out his old site now. I have a cheap bounty hunter but she does the trick. I hope time permits as I love overpriced militaria shows and really want to see one
Im very excited to spend my birthday there, get to see old friend Eric and others.Iam Uncle Sam

I have a VW Golf as well. So I think we'll be doing just fine there with the cars.
As for now I believe we are with seven people: Nick and his brother, Dion and Nathalie, Rich, Eric and myself.
Nico, If you want to join us on saturday you'll be more than welcome off course. It's allways nice to have someone among you who knows the places away from the tourists. Do you want to spent the night as well in Houffalize with us on saturday. let me know, because I need to make reservation.

Sounds good Kale, and thank you very much for handling the rooms. Im a bit sick at the moment and would not have fun doing that.
Here is a link to the website about digging, I finally found it. Does anyone know the location of these woods? I believe it can be found from the old railway station.

I have absolutely no idea of where that is. I don't recognize the surroundings on the picture. On the other hand. this fellow metions bizory
And if you go on top of the monument in bastogne there are several maps of where everybody fought. I fmy memory tells me right I remember that I saw Bizory as well.
On top of the monument you can see the woods, so I think that would be no problem in finding it.

No problem for me to come on saturday. I will not be able to spend the night at Houffalize, because I have some stuff to do on sunday.
I just need to know at what time we meet and where (café, hotel, Bastogne marketplace at the Sherman, Houffalize,....).
Also what we are going to do on Saturday: digging (but it is very wet wheather overhere), visiting some foxholes in Foy, visiting the cemetary in Recogne (I have some deathcards of soldiers buried there), going of for a trip to the nothern part of the Bulge (la Gleize, Baugnez, Stoumont,...), just staying around Bastogne, visiting the massacre cellar in Bande,....
So that I can make a plan and a to-do-list.
If you are all interested off course....
Just let me know

I came pass Bizory last weekend (ammo shopping in Clervaux ). it is one of those little villages around bastogne.
Btw, going to Clervaux is also an option for that day.
It has a castle what was the last defending place with a nice PAK88 in front of it and a Sherman tank.
Options enough to visit

Btw, most of the volksgrenadier divisions were made up of Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe personnel that didn't have a "job" anymore.
They were given basic training and didn't have any combat experiences.
The lonely exception was 26th volksgrenadier, which had the most experienced enlisted, nco's and officers.
They (KM& LW soldiers) were even enlisted in some ss panzer divisions.
That's why many nco and officers were killed in the Bulge, because that had to take the lead of every assault to be insured that orders were fullfilled.
I have a deathcard of a member of a panzer division, who, on his picture, is wearing a luftwaffe uniform. He was killed in januari '45 and is buried on Recogne cemetary.

Hotel L'Ermitage in Houffalize
Allright Guys,
just received a mail from the hotel and they're asking for a creditcardnumber. If there's one thing I don't have its a creditcard.
If anyone has one sent me a pm so I can give that number to the hotel to confirm the reservation.
I will book only saturday night the 16th and 7 people in total. If anyone else wants to spent more nights there or also wants to come use the link I put up earlier in this thread and arrange it yourselves because it's getting me a bit crazy to email the hotel so many times.
we are with four is that possible?
We are with six is that possible?
We are withe seven is that possible?

This sounds like a great trip; wish I still lived in Europe and could join in!
Just a little bit of humerous eating advice - if you're planning to eat at any of the cafes on the square in Bastogne, don't order "Steak Americain." This old country boy didn't realize that was raw hamburger. Actually, I thought it was pretty good with the pearl onions and little pickles, but I just couldn't get my wife and kids to eat it ...
Best,
Greg
