I find the word "group" can be a bit misleading @ times, how many times have you acquired a “group” to then be asked if you would like his dogs tags/paperwork, Oh and I may have another medal or cap badge somewhere? for an extra ££££.

To me a group should be everything belonging to that person!

Anyone caught splitting them-up for profit... *round them up put them in a field and bomb the BAST**DS!! (quote from the late Kenny Everett)

I agree splitting Up groups is a sin, but if they do happen to get split Up wouldn't it be cool to re-unite them? And thus restore a persons history?

One of my hates of this hobby is seing grouping being pulled apart for profit.

I thought we like the stuff because of its historical value?? Surely one mans story spread over the world in many pieces is taking that element away, just sad...

Look even on estand sometime groupingf of pictures are sold in lots, I wouldnt touch any of them as its pointless looking at the item and knowing someone else has the other half... Stupid and should not be encouraged. If an item doesnt sell as a group then the price is too high, better keep it together.

I agree with the above stick them all in a field!

The fact is : The only way to get everything for one guy is to buy it first hand first...then keep it together...unfortunately most collectors who really want to keep stuff together quickly become "whores" when money is needed....or they get tired of collecting....only true collectors can keep complete collections intact, but that doesn't mean the collection is worth less without breaking it up....it should be sold as one, but if one collector doesn't want to pay the price to keep it together at a higher price(as I have always felt complete collections deserve more money than broken ones) then it should only be sold to someone who can afford the price and will appreciate its significance as a group.

I have personally seen people beg for missing items from broken collections and act like they really appreciate getting the stuff back as one, then do the opposite when others take pity on them...and break it up again to be the whore just for the money, and that is despicable....

I recall in LA years ago at the old gun show there was an old man who claimed he never got any medals of his in ww2, and couldn't afford to buy even a combat infantry award he earned...cried the blues , and like the fool...I took pity on the guy...felt for him, and gave him a sterling set for the ones hen lost...the I learned he was a liar , a scammer, and sold the pair I gave him in the next isle , and did this on a regular basis at all the shows ...as many fell for his trick....I then banned him from ever coming to my table again, and he never came back , but I always saw him walk on by smiling....looking for another sucker ...so good luck with the thread, but if they want anything bad enough people will pay top dollar if not even more to reunite things , and only then will you be assured the items will be appreciated....anything donated will always be sold....... as gifts are almost never appreciated like things folks really pay a lot to get back.... never donate to anyone...if so donate to me first...

              Hi,
i think this is a very good idee. I have several groups where docs etc were missing out of several reasons. In some cases i could get in contact with the owners and sometimes were able to reunite the group. If i would own a single doc and know that somebody holds the rest of the group, i would be happy to trade it.
But it should be done like in an exel sheet, where you can easily check the names.
No one wants to read through hundrets of postings.
              Best regards
              Detlev

I think its a good idea we could always make a sticky thread which could have one post continually updated with the new groups with the users name next to it so when found you know who to contact

Sometimes is just a matter of having the money on hand

I bought this nice need administrator tunic on e bay. The seller had the greatcoat form the soldier. I just did not had the money to buy both. I really regret that

imo, if you don't have the money to buy the group.... then don't buy it and don't ask to split. Just my opinion of course

I think it's usually the seller who decides to split up the group. We as collectors should try to do everything to keep a group together or to re unite the items again. We can at least try to bring items back together. So let's not point fingers at anyone just try to help eachother.

Is OK Nick, I regret I did not buy it. I won that tunic on Ebay and the seller told me by the way I have the greatcoat. It was an afterthought. I wish I may find it one day.

                            Good luck

I agree! In my hometown, my family run an antique store/estate sale company. We are the only ones, lessen we call for help, and therefore have a run at things we may wish to purchase from the owners before the sale. Sometimes we find things they were throwing out that were perfectfly good collectibles (Note the smocks in one of my threads). However, even then the families will take what is either sentimental to them or will sell to pay for a few rounds at the local casinos. We attempt to keep them together and whatever is not sold as a grouping is kept by me. I ran amuck at sales on the weekends attempting to buy as many identible items I could, sometimes leaving a few uniform pieces behind due to the fact I had no more money or came back when it was too late. I've stopped collecting on a whole, picking up tidbits here and there but I love vintage things I can use! Sometimes we have to remember these things were only brought together by supply, but once it is attached to a person, it has great meaning. Something that had once been parts of Earth's natural elements are now pieces of some of the mightiest war machines ever devised. Sentimentality can sometimes override reality; however, I like it that way!

                              Just my two sen!
