(27.5.40) Our battalion left Arras at 5:30 in the morning and stopped at Wicquinghem for a short pause. We then reached Yeuse before heading in the direction of Winnezeele with the task to cut off the "British Expeditionary Force" now crammed in Dunkirk, from the rest of France.

Lt. Meyer is our good luck charm against the enemy’s bullets; he stands up without his steel helmet and fires his I.G.’s.

In Zuytpeene, the British demonstrated their incredible violation of the International War law; Medics were shot while trying to rescue our wounded comrades!

(29.5.40 at 15:15 hrs) We've reached the western foot of the "sugar loaf" hill on which Cassel is built, from there our mortars can range freely on the town while we are masked from the enemy artillery fire by the steep contour of the hill but the Cassel height is still partially occupied by the enemy. We’ve decided to head for Winnezelle.
