Some years ago it was widely thought the the 3rd pattern was not even worn in Afrika before 1943, according to DAK folklore. But like so many other myths concerning the DAK, this eventually was proved a false assumption.

The first German units arriving in Tunisia early Nov '42 were LW FJ. So am doubtful that many 3rd patterns would have arrived much earlier than mid Nov. Its certainly possible that 3rd patterns were being worn in Europe in late '42 as well.

Agree. The tunics would have had to have been field-trialed before general issue, of course, then issue to the troops heading South, travel time, etc etc...
I'd still like to add a complete 1942 dated 3rd pattern to 'The Sandpit'. I'll get there.

Thomas, I have to admit that I'm not getting a good feeling regarding your Heer 1st pattern tropical tunic. The tunic unfortunately has some bad insignia. If these have been used to restore an original tunic than they can be removed and a proper restoration completed. Hopefully this is the case.

I bought this one thinking it showed a no grommet cap but if you look up at the very top of the cap I can kinda sorta make out what looks like a grommet :/ Would be a great display next to my no grommet cap if it were the case. Either way a nice postcard named and dated. Matt

Thanks for sharing the photo, I have tried to blow this one up and I can I think possibly but only possibly see that grommet, this could go either way but I am leaning more towards no grommet.. You may yet have the image you need to go with your cap

Philipp, thanks for posting the painting, pretty darn rare I would imagine and it's definitely one that should be hung on the wall.. Don't know why but I feel I have seen a gentleman not unlike this soldier in a period portrait / postcard photo ??

From what I see in the painting the details such as color of the soutache and piping on the shoulder straps might not depict reality. As the cap eagle isn't really an accurate tropical one and the collar tabs seem to have dark green (?) stripes down the middle the soldier depicted may not be "infantry". Furthermore the artist wasn't interested in the breast pocket or eagle. It seems to be a very nice impression but not necessarily realism.

That's why it's a painting and not a photograph.

There are several nice and period oil on canvas paitings posted.

Unless it's not a hyper-realistic paiting, you will notice that uniform "accuracy" did not bothered most of the artists.
