    Trip to Bastogne anyone?

I was thinking about going to Bastogne around the 16th of Dec (Battle of the Bulge anniversary) to see it and experience it in the winter. Anyone interested in going?

i went digging there last year and was dissapointed how little there was to see.a few fox holes near foy along with the 501st memorial and a few bullit riddled houses.the main attraction is in bastonge a little militaria shop but he is expensive

That would be a killer birthday Dion, chillin in the freezing woods in the middle of nowhere with a bunch of your internet buddies!

Let's plan on it. If nothing else, we could all just meet up for lunch or something.

The militaria shop is entertaining with the prices. I might now a place to dig.

                Bastogne/La Gleize

                Hey Guys,

I've been there twice and I had a good time. I think you should go to the forrests of Foy. You can find the foxholes of the 101st and think of what went on there and imagine the battles. If you drive through Foy watch the buildings, you can still see the bullitholes in the houses. Apparently they were never repared. The historical museum is not worth going to in my opinion, but hey who am I.

If you are in the neighbourhood you should go to La gleize. The museum over there has a nice kingtiger standing in front of the door, can't miss it. It's huge. Peiper left the tanks there. The museum is ten times better then in bastogne...

Well I can tell much more, anyway have fun

                    Bastonge 16 and 17 december 2006

                    Hello,

For those of you who are planning to go, you might be interested to know that on both days, 16/17 dec.2006, there will be an exhibition and military fair (buy/trade) in the Army barracks of Bastonge. Exeptional will be the opening of the commandpost of General Mac Auliffie which is also located in these barracks. The exhibition/fair will be open from 9.00 until 17.00 hours. The organisation of this is in the hands of the local 101st Airborne Reenactor.
                    All the best,

                    Wim

I spent my 40th birthday there years ago, and enjoyed it immensly. The Stonehenge like memorial was really nice, and the cemetaries very interesting. Back then, there were a couple militaria shops that had reasonable prices. I picked up a soldier marked breadbag in excellent shape for $20.00. I also enjoyed the museum, but I understand it has changed quite a bit. Sat in the middle of town at a sidewalk cafe with a picture book of what the town loked like shortly after the battle and compared all the buildings to then and now. A great trip,
                      Johnnie

                            Hello all,

I heard the weekend of 16-17 dec. there is going to be a big mock battle in Bastogne with alot of dutch and belgian reenactors.
                            Should be very interesting!
Also the 60th anniversary exposition wich is very impressive is still there until the end of this year.

Sounds like we picked the right year to go. Anyone speak Dutch, French or German (not sure what they speak in the area)? Maybe we could get a group hotel rate if we get organized.

I also emailed the museum to try to get an itinerary of all the activities for the weekend. Will keep you posted.

We should all get pink shirts or something so we can recognize each other!
