I have a similar item , of older production. The inside of which is protected by what seems to resemble an asbestos like coating. This would support the heated nature of the content, thus a barrel perhaps...
Just an idea...

Here is another photo, posted by Gurtsack in another thread, sometime ago. Unless the size and construction is different, but that is difficult to see in the pics. It would be good that both members posted the dimensions and a photo of the interiors, so we could compare.

The black one is certainly not for a spare barrel, i have one with the tripod inside. Do you really think that they will carry a spare barrel in a pouch to be carry on the belt ???

Seems it's no a spare barrel case then. I've had neither of them so could only guess from the pics. From the first pics it could have been but these later ones show it is not. What is the lenth of the barrel case?, just for the record.
