    German Rucksack

    Hello.

I'm looking for information and pictures of German rucksacs (not tornisters).
Could you post pictures and some discription of them?
How to separate them for different groups?
    I know there are:
    - blue Luftwaffe rucksacks - 2 pockets
    - DAK - 2 pockets, straps for main belt
    - Gebirgsj. - 1 big pocket, straps for main belt
    - Artillery - 1 pocket (2, or without too?)
    - WH/SS rucksacks - 2 pockets, straps for main belt

Additionally are diferences in straps, leather or web.
Also Germans used captured Czechoslovakian and Austrian Rucksacks.

All together looks for me very complicated, could you help me to clear it a bit?

Best Regards and Happy New Year.

Here's an salty 43' dated "artillery-rugsack" from my collection. Leather straps, although they existed with webbing-straps as well. Interesting makerstamp : R.Z.F.H.-22.

          Cheers

                Thank you for posting pictures!!!

If it's possible could you add info about markings and year of manufacturing (if exists).

Could you tell me what rucksack it is:
                (no markings at all)

                      Jan,

Interesting markings on your Artillerie Ruksack. I think these may be organization/unit markings instead of a maker. I have a bayonet frog for a S84/98 with similar "R.Z.f.H.#" markings die stamped into the leather. In your marking is your "F" upper case or "f" lower case?

                      George

                        Hi George,

                        It's an "f".

I first thought it was a unit-marking as well, but I honestly don't know if it was common to stamp them into the leather. Also, it left the factory like that IMO, the date and marking is stamped "together", with the same type of lettering. I really doubt that they came out of the factory unmarked, and stamped after being delivered to a certain unit.

I've seen unit markings on all kinds of equipement before, but they were stencilled on straps, the canvas,etc..

                        But never say never offcourse.
Maybe someone can help us out here?

                        Cheers

                          Jan,

Thanks for the information. It sounds like our markings are the same. German Vorschriften did state that leather unit markings could be stamped with a "dull" steel die (that is to say not a sharp one used for marking metal). I have seen plenty of unit markings stamped into German leather in this manner as well as ink stamped, stenciled, or burned. All of which were permissible. I don't know what this marking means but similar "R.Z." markings will be found on both pistols and bayonets. Jan Still lists similar pistol markings and I have two bayonets with similar markings as well as the frog. I will just bet that your mark is such a "unit" style mark instead of a maker stamp. Very interesting to find this marking on a pack...very neat.

Thanks to you George for your detailed replie...I've learned something new

Now, if we only could know which unit used this particular marking. As it is on a so-called "artillery-pack", maybe that makes it a little easier to do re-search?

If I find some information, I'll let you know for sure.

                            Cheers

                              Servus Jan und Kameraden,

Jan, your so-called "Artillery Rucksack" is not one IMHO. I believe it is the kleines Gebirgsjäger Rucksack with the leather shoulder straps and larger top flap with leather trim. The so-called "Artillery Rucksack" does not have shoulder straps, but hooks onto a soldat's Y-straps and has a smaller top flap without any trim. I'll take some photos of both rucksacks together in the next few days.
