Actually, Y-Straps were used by the German Army since the late 1800's. There was a Model 1887 rucksack that attached to Y-straps. During World War I, the Y-straps were mainly issued to artillerymen and cavalrymen. There was also a Tornister M1934 that attached to the Y-straps. The "Artillery Rucksack" that I posted photos of was introduced in 1940.
As to your earlier posted rucksack, I would say that it could be a civilian type hunting or mountaineering rucksack or possibly Russian or Czech.Comment

I am not sure Frank. It is very similar to the standard Mountain rucksack, but the top flap is smaller, and does not appear to have the button down pouch on the backside of that flap. Also, the color is different. The standard Mountain ruck is green, yours a tan color. Of course, the Germans had about 100 variations of rucksacks, but almost all are green from what I know. Are there German markings on it?HCComment

The Rucksack is marked inside with:
Sachs & Deisselberg
Hamburg
1939
At the outside he's marked LBA 1944, so he's used at the end of the war by the Luftwaffe. Ofcourse the hooks are also marked.
He's indeed made of a very interesting material. That's why I found him so interesting. I'm sure he's original, but he doesn't look very standart to me.
That's why I'm interested what other collectors think.

Your rucksack could be several things. In Angolia's book "Uniforms and Traditions of the German Army, Vol. 3" it is called the M31 Rucksack für Hochgebirgstruppe. I think that this in incorrect since photographic evidence and other sources show the M31 Rucksack für Hochgebirgstruppe to be the green type mentioned by Harry with the larger top flap with internal pocket and three outer pockets. Your rucksack could be a private purchase or one of the many civilian type rucksacks used during the war. Many items were procured from Sporting Goods stores. Early photos of Gebirgsjägers, show several different types of rucksacks being used. I have also seen your type of rucksack being used in North Africa by the DAK. Just another one of the many "UN-STANDARD" items used by the Wehrmacht which is "out-of-the-box" from the so called "Standard" issue.....I guess we will never win the war on this issue!!!
