from seeing these kits in one thread, I am starting to build up an idea of what type of items are seen in which kits
for example, this black oiler have seen now in two CNX kits
brown oiler in CMR kits
now the interesting thing I have seen which does not seem to fit the pattern about paint and period are the ARR kits
I have one ARR4 kit in BLUE with later war type chain and oiler, second now I have seen like this
but my ARR4 kit in TAN has the regular type chain, regular type oiler, but only with the bottom that unscrews , I am positive the contents of this kit are not changed
also my FTD tin undated has the late war oiler and chain, but in this thread there is a version with the regular contentsLast edited by grndevil44; 03-28-2010, 01:12 PM.

just to add
the brown oiler, on all the ones I have now seen, has a slight inward taper on the bottom at the part where the bottom unscrews
the black one does not so far have thisLast edited by grndevil44; 03-28-2010, 01:11 PM.

I pick up these cleaning kits whenever I see them at a good price, and to date have 81. I must really like these . This is a great and inforative thread but I still have many questions on them.
From the factory I'm sure all parts marked the same but somewhere along the way, they have gotten mismatched. I guess if a soldier lost or damaged an item in the kit he would have it replaced. Maybe by the company armorer. So you'll see a bakelite oiler in a 1936 marked one where it originally had a machined metal one since the bakelite came out around 41-42. I don't think it mattered to the soldier as long as he had his kit complete. But what if a collector wants to put it back to the way it left the factory? Has anyone actually figured out what maker used what in what year? Or is it just good enough to have it as close as possible, i.e. a G.Appel 1935 marked oiler in any G.Appel marked kit reguardless of the container's date?
I've noticed the brushes come in either black or neutral/tan. Which one was used first and when did they change over? Or were they used at the same time begining to end? I tend to see the black ones in early kits up to 1942. Neutral from 1943 to 45. I've also seen them mixed even in the same kit.
I have take down tools with a short stud, long stud, removed stud and never had a stud at all. Obviouly marked ones are easy to figure out but what of the unmarked ones. I would say the ones without a stud could go with a kit for an MP-38 or 40 as it doesn't have a floor plate but does need the breach cleaned.
