Is it possible to see also the canteen?
And, of course, as I'm a canteens collector...if you ever decide for the selling of this box please let me know.
      Thanks.

It depends. M31 could be aluminium made canteens. M42 could be steel made canteen ( as Germans start making canteen from steel in 1942 ).

That's why I usualy using designation like m31 for early canteens made of aluminium, m31/42 for canteens made in steel.

The same with messkits ; early aluminium made m31, mid to late steel made M31/42 and late war aluminium made m31/44 ( as they have many features of steel messkit but are made from aluminium ).

The same with other equipment etc. IMO it should be also aditional designation of changes made during the war ( as one described above ).

Look at the helmets ; in shape they are the same, but some changes were made during war and names changed from m35 to m40 ( because of changes in vent holes) , from m40 to m42 ( because of changes in thicknes steel and rim being bent ouside instead inside ) .

So, if I understand your thoughts, we have:

                  M31- alloy canteens
                  M31/42-steel canteens
                  M31/44-enameled canteens

Could be? And what about "semplified" canteens with erstaz cover and 3 buttons? It's really interesting this thing...

Photos of the canteen. I was told, it proceed from a spanish store. Perhaps for the Legion Condor.

Enameled canteen are also M31/42 as they start to make them in the very same period of time as steel painted one.

So there are 2 diffrent types of standart canteens :

                            1) Aluminium M31
                            2) Steel M31/42

Ciao Marcin and thanks again for your answer.
As I know only AEM.A made enameled things from 42 (canteen's cup), btw I agree with you.
                              Ciao, Gian.

PS: Mike, can I use your pictures to post on my italian forum? I'd like to open a discussion like this because, IMO, is really interesting
